San Fernando Hospital Clinic introduces a new generation of Percutaneous Aortic Valves.

In recent days, a team of specialists has performed the first replacement of a new model of percutaneous aortic valve. The procedure performed is known as TAVI for its acronym in English (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant) which means Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

This is necessary when a heart valve calcifies due to age and causes narrowing, causing a pathology called Aortic Stenosis.

The team in charge of the procedure was made up of Dr. Ubaldo Hernández – Physician in charge of the procedure, Dr. Adolfo Ferrero – Proctor de Edwards – Interventional Cardiologist from Argentina,

Dr. Gustavo Villarreal – Second operator of the procedure and Dr. Ronald Smith – Anesthesiologist.

Previously, this valve replacement was performed through open heart surgery, but today with Transcatheter technology, this replacement is performed in a minimally invasive manner, considerably reducing the risks and allowing a rapid recovery of the patient. As part of the benefits in this case, the anesthesia used was done under conscious sedation without general anesthesia and the patient was discharged from the hospital the next day.
